ZWISCHENLANDSCHAFTEN 3, Video
Zwischenlandschaften III presents an artistic exploration in response to artworks included in the landmark duo exhibition >Mike Kelley</(Franz West)? at Hôtel Empain (now Villa Empain) in 1999-2000. By bringing together imagery and a monologue comprised of anecdotes, notes and experiences collected from their research and creation process, the video creates a poetic collage that encapsulates Nabuurs and Van Doorn’s in-depth cerebration behind the project. The locations depicted in the video include the Villa Empain in Brussels, where Nabuurs and Van Doorn presented the exhibition ZLS3 feat. >Mike Kelley</(Franz West)? (2018), the route from Mike Kelley’s birth house in Westland to Michigan Avenue, Mobile Homestead (2010) an artwork by Kelley that replicates his birth-home, which is exhibited at MOCAD, and the Viennese forest where Franz West had taken Mike Kelley for a drive in his new Lamborghini.
One edition of Zwischenlandschaften III belongs to the Van Abbemuseum Collection, Eindhoven.
ZWISCHENLANDSCHAFTEN 3, Interventions
In May 2018 Nabuurs & Van Doorn performed six minimal interventions in Vienna in order to revive the spirit of Franz West, they called this Six Odes to Mephistopheles. These interventions involved projecting short extracts from email correspondence at specific locations strongly intertwined in Vienna’s cultural landscape. The public and private locations were gleaned from archived recordings, online articles, published interviews and conversation. From these live interventions Nabuurs & Van Doorn produced a series of six photographs through which they recorded each outcome.
ZWISCHENLANDSCHAFTEN 3, Modules, research sculptures
Nabuurs & Van Doorn use their research material to construct sculptures using a method they call "Clean Archive" (reference to Clean House). Research and form, private and public, are no longer about life but about the relationship between place and mind (psychogeography). Philosopher Georgio Agamben (GA) claims the end of modernism is the fusion of life and work. This fusion made contemplation impossible. In "The Use of Bodies" (2014), GA calls on artists to visualize non-operational systems in response. Nabuurs & Van Doorn experiment with this by activating their sculptures through game pieces. Something has happened, nothing is happening now, but something could happen again in the near future. A non-operational zone, not determined by the relationship to a practice or work, but by potential and inactivity.
ZWISCHENLANDSCHAFTEN 3, Game Piece
The Game Piece is a flexible performance concept designed by Nabuurs and Van Doorn which can be performed by between 2 and 6 players (performers); a drummer, a dancer, a rapper, a vlogger, a martial artist, and an instrumentalist. The playground (performance space) is designed according to the number of players and the location. Using the work of Mike Kelley as an ignition point, Nabuurs and Van Doorn have created a performance language based on the landscape of Michigan Avenue, Detroit. Geometric symbols derived from the landscape’s cartographic elements act as modern-day hieroglyphics, of which there are 6 scores; Green, Red, Blue, Orange, Purple, Yellow. During the Game Piece each performer is fed a separate string of code via a projection that displays the symbols from the chosen score, the main purpose of this code is to act as a vessel for the performers to imbue with their own choices. Due to the improvisational nature of the concept each Game Piece is therefore different.
ZWISCHENLANDSCHAFTEN 3, Game Piece Scores
The Game Piece Scores are not to be thought of as a line who leads players through the game piece but as points to which the players respond and follow performative directions of their own desire.
