The works we present in The Noise are part of our new series Memories Between Edges, a continuation and condensation of the long-term body of work Zwischenlandschaften (2014–2022).

At the heart of this series lies a cartographic archive: a collection of physical maps we’ve carried with us for over three decades—souvenirs of travel for work or pleasure, always intended to become artworks one day. These maps, folded and refolded, annotated in the margins, held both precise and lost memories. Some markings we recognized; others had become illegible traces. We decided to treat these notes as trans-sites—censoring them, as we have done with documents in Zwischenlandschaften, to make room for new interpretations.

We glued the maps onto canvas, creating space to re-navigate these landscapes. As we worked, memories surfaced—half-forgotten impressions, fleeting emotions. We re-inscribed them, then partially erased them again, folding time in on itself.

Influenced by Edward S. Casey’s “The World on Edge” (2017), which suggests that memories can only exist “between edges”—anchored not in clarity but in atmosphere—we began assigning colors to the corners of each map. These colors became emotional coordinates: moods, impressions, sensory fragments linked to place. The colored edges were then softly merged using translucent white paint—avoiding the hard cuts of news media or documentary film. Like in our Zwischenlandschaften videos, we sought not to depict reality, but to create space for its alternatives.

Each canvas is a portal: a suggestion of what could have been. A dream logic in which memory, fiction, and geography blur. In one corner, a drawn symbol appears—two ovals connected by a vortex. It echoes the mirror from Alice in Wonderland, both entry and exit into a realm where nothing is as it seems. This symbol for time-travelling, coupled with our signature, is a gesture of intent: to express that which evades the rational, that which resists being mapped.

Memories Between Edges invites viewers to linger in the in-between. To attune to the noise beneath the noise.
